This is a Hakata Ningyo from Japan, a traditional japanese clay doll. The clay is put in a plaster mold and then baked. The dolls are left unglazed after painting. This one is a boy sitting beside a festival lantern. There are a few irregularities in the painting, perhaps caused by the fabrication process or handling. He is a hollow figure with a small hole at the bottom.
