Beautiful hilltribe doll representing the Padaung or Kayan people, a sub-group of the Karen people. The Karen live in Thailand, China, Myanmar (Burma), Laos and Vietnam. This doll is made in Thailand according to the sticker under her stand that reads 'Chiangmai Dolls Making Centre, Name of Doll: Karen (Karen or Yang). Designed by: Vanida S. Mongkhon. Handmade by: Youthana Boonprakong. Made in Thailand'. The Padaung women can wear upto 20 brass rings around their neck to make it look longer, it is supposed to be a sign of great beauty and wealth. Their own mythology tells another story; the rings should prevent tigers from biting. She is holding a lot of fruits: in her hand, in a round bamboo basket and in a basket on her back.
